How Often Should You Change Your Toothbrush?

Posted by Modesto Kidz dental on Feb 11 2022, 05:54 AM

Since childhood, our parents have emphasized the importance of brushing our teeth twice a day. However, in order to get the most out of your brushing session, you should also replace your toothbrush with a new one periodically. Wondering when it should be done? Keep reading.

In addition, if you wish to know more about dental hygiene practices, you can contact Dr. Bhavini Shelat and Dr. Haseeb Sheikh at Modesto Kidz Dental in Modesto, California. Their vast experience in dentistry, especially pediatric dentistry will help clear any doubts you may have.

When Should You Replace Your Toothbrush?

As we all brush our teeth at least twice a day, the wear and tear on our brush becomes noticeable over time. The bristles are splayed or change shape. This is a sign you should replace your toothbrush immediately.

Your brush is also the first thing that comes into contact with disease-causing bacteria and tends to accumulate germs. Sticking to a germ-infested brush may lead to illnesses and also aggravate your dental problems.

An electric toothbrush tends to wear out faster. This happens due to shorter bristles and the impact of vibratory motions on them. You should use this only for a maximum of 12 weeks and replace it with a new one.

Replacing Your Toothbrush Under Special Circumstances

If you or anyone in your family is sick, consider replacing not just your toothbrush but everyone else’s too. This is because viruses and bacteria can survive for up to three days on a toothbrush and can spread from one person to another especially when the toothbrushes are stored together.

How to Maintain Your Toothbrush for Longer

Unlike other grooming tools, your toothbrush needs more care and maintenance. Here are some ways to maintain them better:

  • After using your toothbrush, rinse it thoroughly with water and let it dry. Keep it in an upright position.
  • Don’t use mouthwash, soap, or sanitizer to clean your toothbrush.
  • Keep your toothbrush away from the toilet area. This is to protect it from the fine particles that may spray out during flushing.
  • Never share a toothbrush with anyone. If two brushes get mixed up, replace them.
