New Year's Resolutions for Kids' Healthy Teeth and Gums

At our house, New Year's resolutions aren't just for adults. We also set resolutions for our kids. This year, we're encouraging our kids to practice good oral hygiene.

Proper Brushing

Children should brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day. If a child has difficulty doing so, parents can supervise and assist them until they get the hang of it. Parents should make sure children's teeth are brushed all the way to the gum line, using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Flossing

Children should begin flossing as soon as they have two teeth that touch each other. This is usually around age six. For children younger than this, parents should clean the child's gums with water and a cloth or a small soft toothbrush. This should be done until your child is ready to begin flossing.

When it comes to flossing for children, there are a few things to keep in mind. Parents should floss their children's teeth for them until they are able to do so themselves. Parents should also teach their kids how to properly floss their teeth so that they do not damage their gums or cause them to bleed. Some fun ways to help children learn to floss include creating a song they can sing while they floss, using a mouthwash that contains fluoride to help make it more appealing for kids, and using colorful flosses to make the chore more fun. Flossing can help your kids' teeth stay healthy and strong throughout their life.

Regular Dental Checkups

Going to the dentist is probably not one of the resolutions that your kids made this year. However, it may be one of the most important ones to make sure they keep! That's because regular appointments allow your dentist to detect tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues in their earliest stages when they can be more easily treated and reversed. In fact, the American Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist every six months. Scheduling these appointments for the New Year is a great way to start the year off right for everyone in your family!

The dentist can detect tooth decay and other issues in its earliest stages. This makes them far easier and less expensive to treat.

Early detection means better overall health for your child. An ounce of prevention really is worth a pound of cure when it comes to dental care. Plus, it prevents your child from missing out on the many benefits that come from good daily dental hygiene habits and routine care. When children have a healthy smile, they are able to eat better, speak clearly, and enjoy more self-esteem and confidence as a result.

In addition to catching problems early, regular visits give children a chance to ask their dentist any questions about their teeth or oral hygiene that they may have been too afraid to ask before. Your children's dentist is trained to handle even the toughest pediatric dental questions and provide supportive answers that can set their minds at ease and help them do better at-home brushing and flossing. When it comes to your children, it's always a good idea when the chance presents itself to arm them with the knowledge they need to make healthy choices and continue positive habits for a lifetime to come.
